Invest in your nutrition with plant-based supplements

We don’t think much about the health of our cells. How often do we ask whether our cells have access to the molecules that they need to repair tissue, to regenerate organs and to maintain their functions. Our human ancestors spent the first 100,000 years of our existence foraging and cultivating a ranging diet containing hundreds of different plants. We now get 60% of our calories as a species from only 4 crops––rice, wheat, maize and potato (1). Only in the last hundred years, with the industrialization of our food system, have humans turned to supplements to sustain nutritional health. Instead of a diverse diet of wild plants and crops producing hundreds of molecules, the vitamin industry has created a long list of manufactured daily pills. In recent years, science has only scratched the surface of Chinese Ayurvedic and Native plants in supporting cell nutrition.

Small Batch Quality

Consistently extracting a high-quality product from the best organic ingredients is time-consuming and delicate. At our FDA-registered extract facility, we produce small batches in lab-grade glass vats because it gives us the precision and control that we need to produce an outstanding product every time. Certain processes cannot be replicated in big steel tanks, and the precision required for these extracts is one of them.

Farm-to-Bottle Transparency

We lab-test each batch to assure the highest quality and consistency. Our Nokomis Seed-To-Bottle-Traceability Standards go above and beyond the current organic standards on traceability, testing and quality of ingredients. Every ingredient and every bottle can be traced all the way back to our certified organic field where the plants were grown and the seed that was planted.

All the active ingredients in our products are precisely quantified and transparently labeled. None of our products are ambiguously labeled “Proprietary Blends” which conceal how much of the various ingredients are actually being used to make the extract.

Why Choose A Cold-Pressed Liquid Extract?

In plant extracts––like with coffee or tea, the soluble molecules of the plant are soaked and separated from the pulpy fibrous materials leaving those molecules suspended in a liquid. It takes quality ingredients to make quality extracts, and even then the process still requires time and precision.

The myriad of powdered extracts, gelcaps or concentrates on the market are often heated or put through pressurized and heated processing–– what is called “supercritical” processing. Heating and pressurized processes strip away a broad range of compounds only to target a specific popular compounds like the withanolides in Ashwagandha. By targeting popular molecules, these products often lose a broad-range of therapeutic molecules and synergists inhering in the plant. Studies have shown that the one popular molecule from the plant can have less effect when taken in isolation when compared with an extract of the entire plant containing a broad range of molecules (2).

Nokomis liquid extracts are the result of extensive research and experimentation. They are cold-pressed and never heated, retaining the broad range of valuable nutritional and therapeutic compounds which are often lost in other processing methods.

In short, even though other products like pills and powders might be more convenient (and less bitter), they do not always have the same effect as cold-pressed liquid extracts.

Things to Keep in Mind

Many Chinese herbal manuals prescribe plant supplement doses in grams per day of the raw powdered ingredient (often ranging between 1-3 grams/day). Nokomis Extracts are made with a ratio of 350mg of raw dried ingredient per 1ml of liquid. So taking a 1ml dropperful 3x daily corresponds to just over 1 gram per day (1.05 grams exactly).

But remember that the body often absorbs the molecules from a liquid extract more readily than from a powdered raw ingredient, so someone taking Nokomis liquid extract will often take slightly less than an herbalist-recommended daily dose of a raw powdered herb.

Likewise, since people have different metabolisms and sensitivities, people respond differently to various doses. And it is important to keep considerations like sensitivity and body weight in mind when taking herbal supplements.

Nokomis Mixed Formulas
& Single-Plant Extracts

Our mixed formulas were developed from published scientific studies in peer-reviewed scientific journals. These mixed formulas were designed to deliver complementary extracts from multiple plants in a single formula. Our mixed formulas typically feature 2 to 4 complementary herbs.

Herbal supplements need to be of a high quality and taken at sufficient quantity for the body to absorb the nutrients. Chinese herbal traditions often recommend as much as 1 to 3 grams per day of various herbs. Other products on the market that list a dozen or so ingredients will often not provide a sufficient amount of the many ingredients listed in the bottle. Remember each plant produces a wide range of molecules and synergists.

Less can be more: simple but potent mixed formulas with a few of the best herbs is our philosophy. And one can always add an additional single-plant extract to take along with a mixed formula

Our mixed formulas are designed for convenience, but people who only want one or two ingredients from a given mixed formula can will also order the single-plant extracts separately as individual extracts.
